Finally managed to sit down and write my 2nd journal entry, and it is exactly 1 month since my first DA submission. Looking at the pageviews - Wow.. it is 21378! Seems like my works did appeal to the members. Thank you thank you!
Besides, There are quite a number of members asking me about my Pepper Projects. For those who have been following my gallery comments and replies, you would have had quite a good glimpse of what this project is about. Nevertheless, I do feel that it is the time to post a proper write-up on Pepper Project, especially for the newer watchers of mine.
WHAT IS PEPPER PROJECT EXACTLY?
Pepper Project is a self-initiated project as a mean to explore different illustration styles with an uniflied subject. It has no criteria, no restrictions, no rules and no deadline. Basically it is an on-going project for myself to consistently pushing my limit in the area of digital art, on top of my fulltime job.
WHO IS PEPPER?
Pepper is a fictional character, 100% designed by me. She is designed to be the mascot of my desgin agency- Paprika www.paprika.com.sg , which it explains why the name Pepper. She is supposed to be our virtual receptionist as well, although we have not done much in that aspect. In short, she is simply that Unified Subject in all of my pepper artworks. Because of the diversity of illustration styles I've been implementing in this project, how Pepper looks exactly is still a question mark.
WHY PEPPER PROJECT?
As a graphic designer, I always like to challenge myself and to strive for consistent breakthrus. I always wanted to do things differently and based on my personal preference. Unfortunately, commercial designs are often driven by clients' objectives and perspectives. Which sometimes can be a little too boring, and i may risk building a comfort zone around me that is too comfortable for me to move on, to improve and excel. Pepper Project is to fill in this gap and to provide me with a good channel to explore new things, to be a constant reminder to move out of my comfort zone, to be bold and adventurous.
WHY SO MANY STYLES?
Well, I guess it is fun to do. I couldn't imagine myself doing the same thing over and over again. As a digital artist, i want to try new things.
WHAT WILL I DO WITH ALL THESE PEPPER ARTWORKS?
Hmm, i have no plan yet. Maybe when i finish the 100th Pepper, I will compile them into a book for sale. haha... possible. For now, they are just your eye candies.
WHO IS STANLEY LAU?
Stanley Lau is a chinese. He was born in HK, mirgated to Singapore when he was 17. He love graphic designs and illustrations since young. His first and only official design qualification is a diploma in Visual Communication at Temasek Poly Singapore. 90% of his design knowledge is from books, magazines and comics.
His first job after graduation is a senior graphic design @ Ogilvy & Mather Interactive, where he stayed for 2 months and quit the job after being overwhelmed by the internal politics. He, together with 3 other of his teammates at O&M, founded Paprika Interactive www.paprika.com.sg 3 years ago, where they are free from hierachy and politics, where they can truely express themselves and do good designs. Stanley is now working as the Head Art Director in Paprika.
Stanley has launched a street fashion label called Animal Square www.animalsquare.com 9 months ago, together with his girlfriend- Madeline.
Stanley is still very passionate about design and cg art. Stanley still draw Pepper on a regular basis.
