sketch (45mins) -> Lineart (1.5hr) -> Grayscale (2hrs) -> Final colouring (3hrs)

All steps done in Painter.

Sometimes I paint in grayscale, sometime not. Depending on the final style I want. But it is relatively easier to get the good tonal values when painting in grayscale. :)

is it better to do it in gray scale before coloring?, does it make it easier for shadowing? great work btw

Wow! The process is really impressive. What kind of graphic tablet do you use? Wacom? If yes, Intuos or Cintiq? And do you use watercolor or another tool?

how exactly do you go from greyscale paint stage to the full color stage?
do you lay color underneath the greay scale layer? above?

I've been looking for that answer too, for quite some months actually.

I may be wrong, but I think using a multiply layer over the grayscale will do the trick

I love this it's really useful seeing how you do your work step by step. I really don't understand ho you go from the finished greyscale final colouring to the full colour final :/ If you ever get chance to explain this i'm sure many of your fans will be grateful!!

Hey Artgerm, how do you go from gray scale to color? I have a picture I did completely in blacks and grays and now I am trying to add color to the picture. I have trying to just use another layer over the older one, but the colors just don't come out correctly, or just cover up the tones and details because the color is too dark and the details are too light.

Do you have a solution?

I would also merge the image, save as new file and play around with levels, hue and saturation, burn, dodge, extra layers in multiply and overlay mode for effects. Just play around a bit. Hope that helps. :)
