THE GREAT TEN #2
Written by Tony Bedard
Art by Scott McDaniel & Andy Owens

Cover by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau

The Old Chinese Gods have returned and they’re out for vengeance! With the citizens of China caught in the middle, the Old Gods battle against the Great Ten, but the super functionaries are no match for the angry, ancient gods, not when one member – the Celestial Archer – chooses to turn against his team and fight alongside the gods!

I cringe every time I see an "archer" in my deviantWATCH box. The reason being is that very few artists seem to do there homework when it comes to depicting something that they may not have ever done or seen before. I do like the asian references in the background, but was very distracted by the factual errors in the piece.

To start with the arrows in the quiver have feathers, but the one on the bow does not. The hand drawing the bow is not holding the bowstring correctly, either. Secondly, the arrow is on the wrong side of the bow, and it should be resting on the extended index finger of that hand.

Other than that, it's a very nice piece of work, despite the detail flaws ....

I know you didn't draw it, but the archery technique is way off... Other than that, it's pretty cool =P

Just one comment to say in criticism, cause the artwork is amazing. And this is not just you, I've seen it elsewhere simply because most people are not archers. As it happens, I am. So what I would say is that even in older bows, the hand grip would not be cut into the bow like that or else it would snap the bow. But if it were cut in, or rounded wood was used to give a grip-like look, the arrow would not be nocked (resting on) against the section of the grip cut-out. That would result in the fletching (feathers/vanes of the arrow) completely glancing off the hand, if not being stripped completely off, and the arrow would vear terribly off target. A more likely situation would be a less dramatic cut-away for the hand, and the arrow resting on a separate nock or bend a little above the hand, to keep its release clean. That's just a side information note on archery. As far as the artwork and techincal skill, great job! Excellent composition as well.

I think he decided to take more of an artistic license to the piece. I don't necessarily think that this would be the tradition costume either...it's all in what looks interesting to the viewer. THAT ....and the fact that this guy is suppose to be a god....so...he can use whatever kind of bow he wants :XD: hahahah

I do know what you are saying though...I noticed it too ;P
