I think part of the reason it's so appealing to so many people is because it takes many of the most compelling themes from manga-style pinups, without driving away most of the population by being all ANIMU.

I mean think about it: Strange-yet-oddly-appropriate headgear, V-sign, large eyes.
The pose is a bit more diva-like, but it has certain allusions to the anime style as well.
